Mat Salleh atau nama sebenarnya Datu Mat Salleh merupakan pejuang Sabah yang terkenal dalam memberi tentangan yang hebat kepada penjajahan Inggeris di Sabah. Mat Salleh pernah mengisytiharkan daerah Tambunan atau dalam bahasa Mat Salleh 'Negeri Tambunan' sebagai daerah di bawah kekuasaunnya.
Mat Salleh ialah anak kedua dalam sekeluarga empat adik-beradik daripada suku Βajau dan Ѕulu. Ibunya daripada suku Bajau. Abangnya bernama Ali, sedangkan adik-adiknya bernama Badin dan Bolong.Datu Mohammad Salleh mengambil tugas bapanya, Datu Balu sebagai ketua kampung di daerah Lingkabo dan Sungai Sugut. Perbelanjaan pentadbiran Datu Mat Salleh adalah daripada pungutan cukai ke atas pedagang-pedagang yang melalui Sungai Sugut pada tahun 1894.

Inggeris tidak senang dengan tindakan Mat Salleh itu, lalu menyerang Mat Salleh di Jambongan serta memusnahkan kampung Mat Salleh di Sungai Sugut pada tahun 1896.

Datu Mat Salleh bagaimanapun dapat melepaskan diri. Detik perjuangan Datu Mat Salleh menentang pencerobohan dan keganasan Syarikat Berpiagam Borneo Utara bermula pada bulan Julai 1897
