Kota Kinabalu: Four houses and a food stall were destroyed in a fire at Kg Warisan, in Inanam, near here, Thursday.
The house owners and stall operator, who could not salvage anything as they were all at work or away, estimated their losses at more than RM200,000.
Stall operator, Ismail Ghani, 41, who was also running a sundry shop at the stall, was with his family at the market during the fire, believed to have started at about noon.
"We were shocked to see so many fire engines at our village when we returned homeÉonly then we realised our stall which is also where we lived had been engulfed by fire," he said, estimating his losses at about RM70,000.
Azhimi Nizam Jaan, 20, whose house was located next to the stall, was at home with his grandmother when he heard people shouting outside.
"I quickly ran out and helped put out the fire but it grew very fast and we had no choice but to flee," he said. His parents, Jaan Idris and Dolnah Naib, were away at work.
Jainal Sabbudin, 56, whose two houses were located behind the stall, was at work in the city centre.
A total of 13 people comprising his family members and relatives stayed in the two dwellings, he added.
